Performance Footwear Design: Innovation for Athletes

Course Overview

This advanced course is designed for aspiring footwear designers who want to specialize in high-performance athletic footwear. It explores the intersection of sport science, biomechanics, materials innovation, and functional design. Participants will learn how elite footwear is developed for speed, support, traction, cushioning, and injury prevention across different sports categories.
Through research, sketching, digital development, prototyping, and critique sessions, students will create a complete performance footwear concept tailored to a specific sport and athlete profile.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the functional demands of different sports and athlete types
  • Analyze movement patterns and biomechanics for footwear design
  • Design performance-focused uppers, midsoles, and outsole systems
  • Select advanced materials for support, breathability, cushioning, and traction
  • Develop sustainable and innovative footwear concepts
  • Build prototypes and conduct wear-testing evaluations
  • Create a professional footwear presentation package including tech packs and renderings
